Sepura, Siemens Austria and Rohde & Schwarz Bick joined forces to provide TETRA communications to the Indonesian police in the aftermath of the tsunami which devastated the Banda Aceh region on 26th December 2004. Siemens Austria supplied the police in Banda Aceh with a mobile radio station and a team of engineers in support of search and rescue operations.
Sepura provided over 100 hand-held terminals in support of the co-ordination of clearing up and re-construction initiatives. The TETRA radio station became operative on 18th January 2005; it was ready for operation within 24 hours of its arrival in Banda Aceh. The mobile TETRA radio system has a range of 20 kilometres and can be operated independently or linked to other radio stations. The TETRA facility was used for over three months and completely replaced the communication infrastructure in the Banda Aceh region which had been largely destroyed by the tsunami. It is expected that the local authorities will require the expansion of the radio system to cover the whole region.
